How to Inspect a Machine Remotely: A Buyer's Live Video-Call Checklist

A remote inspection is only as good as the questions you ask on the call. Here is the checklist that turns a video call into real due diligence.

Why a live call beats a recorded video

A recorded video shows you what the seller chose to record. A live video call means you can ask the operator to zoom in on the data plate, point the camera at the hour meter, or start the engine right now. The seller cannot edit a live call. Insist on live, and be the one directing the camera.

The 10-point remote inspection checklist

1. Data plate — have it held to the camera; note model, serial and year.
2. Hour meter — ask them to power the machine on and film the reading live.
3. Cold start — is the engine already warm? Ask for a start from cold and watch for smoke and hesitation.
4. Hydraulic cycle — every function through a full cycle, under load if possible.
5. Undercarriage / tyres — close-up of tracks, sprockets, idlers or tyre tread.
6. Pins and bushings — zoom on the bucket and boom joints; listen for slop.
7. Leaks — walk around slowly; ask about any wet patches on the ground.
8. Weld and frame — check for fresh paint over cracks and obvious repair.
9. Safety devices — alarms, emergency stop, overload warning.
10. The report — ask to see the written inspection checklist on the same call.

Red flags on a remote call

A seller who keeps the camera wide and never zooms in, who refuses a cold start, who “will send a video later,” or who cannot produce the data plate is telling you something.
