Import duties, VAT and taxes: know your HS code

Excavators fall under HS code 8429 (self-propelled machinery with a jib, crane, or excavator). The duty rate on this heading varies dramatically by country: some apply 0% for used construction equipment, many apply 5–10%, and some apply 15–35% or higher. On top of duty, most countries charge VAT or GST on the landed value (CIF + duty), and some impose additional excise or environmental levies on older machines.

The landed cost formula is: Landed Cost = CIF Value + Import Duty + VAT/GST + Other Levies + Clearance Fees. Preventive maintenance follows standard hourly intervals: 50-hour (first service), 250-hour (engine oil and filter), 500-hour (hydraulic and air filters, undercarriage check), 1,000-hour (hydraulic oil change, coolant flush), and 2,000-hour (major service, swing gear and final drive oil).
