Why this buyer came to us
A shipyard operator in Hai Phong was preparing a dry dock for a 6-month overhaul cycle and needed a 22 m diesel straight-boom lift to access the upper sections of vessels in dock. The local rental market in Hai Phong was tight, and the operator preferred to own the unit for the 6-month deployment and then either keep it for ongoing work or sell it into the local market. They asked us to quote a 22 m telescopic boom lift, refurbished to our 4-level standard, FOB Hai Phong.
What we sourced
We held a 2012 Genie S-65 in Hefei. The unit had been on a single Chinese industrial site for most of its life, with consistent operator hours and a clean operating environment. At intake, the machine was B-grade: working order, paintwork worn, no structural issues, all systems functional. The buyer agreed to a refurbished delivery standard — cosmetic and functional, no full strip-down.
What the refurbishment covered
Full external clean, single-coat repaint in Genie blue to the original RAL, replacement of obviously worn consumables (filters, belts, batteries, one drive tyre), functional test of all boom and slew functions, platform load test at 110% rated, and a 29-checkpoint sign-off. We did not pull the hydraulic system and we did not replace the boom pins. For a 6-month shipyard deployment, the scope matched the buyer's needs and budget.
Turnaround was 9 days, including paint cure. The unit was loaded at Shanghai on day 12, the buyer arranged the ocean leg to Hai Phong through their own forwarder, and the unit arrived at Hai Phong on day 22. Total PO-to-on-site was 24 days.
What the buyer did next
The shipyard operator commissioned the unit on arrival and ran it for the full 6-month dry-dock cycle. At the end of the deployment, the unit was sold into the Vietnamese second-hand market, supported by the 29-checkpoint report and the as-shipped photos. The buyer told us the report made the resale conversation significantly easier — the local buyer did not need to be convinced of the unit's condition.
What we learned from this engagement
For a 6-month deployment with an expected resale at the end, refurbished is the right scope. The 29-checkpoint report does double duty: it supports the buyer's own use of the unit, and it makes the eventual resale conversation easier. The cost of a full remanufactured scope would not have been recovered at the resale point; the refurbished scope gave the buyer a unit that worked, looked presentable, and came with a written report.
